The Fundamentals of Counseling Victims of Infidelity
Speaker: Roy Kim, LMFT, CSAT
Infidelity can cause profound emotional and psychological trauma for those affected, often resulting in feelings of betrayal, anger, grief, and diminished self-worth. This workshop is designed for mental health professionals who seek to better understand how to support individuals coping with the aftermath of infidelity.
Participants will explore the emotional, cognitive, and behavioral impacts of infidelity on victims, learning how to create a safe and empathetic therapeutic environment. The workshop will cover key counseling techniques such as validation, active listening, and how to guide clients through complex emotions like anger, sadness, and confusion. Additionally, attendees will learn how to help clients manage triggers, rebuild self-esteem, and begin the journey toward healing, whether that involves reconciliation or moving forward independently.
The workshop will also introduce frameworks for addressing relationship dynamics post-infidelity, examining whether and how couples can rebuild trust. We will examine factors to seriously consider such as cultural pressure, narcissism, and addiction. Special attention will be given to helping victims navigate common cognitive distortions, such as self-blame, and understanding the broader psychological impacts of betrayal trauma.
Through demonstrations, case studies, and group discussions, participants will gain practical skills to apply in real-world counseling settings. By the end of the session, participants will be equipped with basic strategies for helping individuals process their emotions, make informed decisions, and regain a sense of personal empowerment.
